Before you fall in love with those fluffy curls, there’s something important you should know: Poodle coats need a lot of care.

Many new owners are told things like “they don’t need grooming until they’re one” or “they’re low-maintenance.” Sadly, that’s not true. Waiting too long can cause painful matting and serious skin issues.

What Happens When You Skip Grooming

When a poodle’s coat isn’t brushed often, the soft curls start to tangle. Those tangles get tighter until the fur clumps together close to the skin, this is called pelting.

Pelting is uncomfortable and can cause:

  • Skin irritation and infections

  • Pain when walking or lying down

  • Restricted movement

It’s heartbreaking, because the top of the coat might still look fluffy while the skin underneath is completely matted. Once this happens, there’s only one safe option: clipping the coat short right back to the skin.

Why Poodles & Doodles Need Extra Care

Poodles and their mixes (like Spoodles, Cavoodles, and Labradoodles) have very soft, curly coats that trap moisture and tangle easily. Even rain, swimming, or a quick bath can cause knots if the coat isn’t brushed and dried properly. To keep that fluffy look, you’ll need to:

  • Brush and comb two to three times a week

  • Use a slicker brush first, then a metal comb to reach the skin

  • Book professional grooming every 4-8 weeks

Skipping regular brushing or grooms almost always leads to matting, even if your dog “looks fine.”

Why Groomers Sometimes Have to Shave Short

When your groomer says, “Your dog’s coat is too matted to brush out,” they’re not being lazy. Clippers can’t cut through mats! Only under them.

It’s the kindest choice for your dog’s comfort, even if it means they leave the salon looking a little different than you expected. Once the coat grows back, regular brushing will prevent it from happening again.

Easy Grooming Tips for Home

💧 Brush before baths – Water makes mats worse. 🌬️ Blow-dry after getting wet – Never let the coat air-dry tangled. 🐶 Learn line-brushing – Your groomer can show you how to brush section by section to reach the skin. 🧼 Start early – Book your puppy’s first groom right after vaccinations. 🪮 Invest in a good slicker brush and comb – It makes a world of difference.

Beware of Misinformation

Unfortunately, some breeders still tell new owners that their pups don’t need clipping or grooming until they’re a year old. This advice is wrong and harmful. Early grooming is essential! it helps puppies learn to enjoy the process and keeps their coats healthy.

A responsible breeder will be honest about coat care and help set you up for success.

Poodle crosses are beautiful, smart, and affectionate but their coats need consistent care.

If you love the look, make sure you can commit to: ✅ Regular brushing and combing ✅ Frequent professional grooming ✅ Working with your groomer, not against them

With the right routine, your dog’s coat will stay soft, healthy, and comfortable and those cute curls will shine for all the right reasons. 💛🐾
