Finding the right dog lead isn’t just about picking a nice colour - it’s about comfort, safety, and making walks enjoyable for both you and your dog. With so many options out there, knowing the differences can help you choose the perfect one.

Types of Dog Leads

  1. Slip Lead – These are our go-to choice at Canine & Co, and we highly recommend them for both safety and control.

The collar-and-leash combo design offers quick, effective feedback, making them excellent for training and everyday walks. When fitted and used correctly, they provide gentle, consistent communication with your dog.

Pros: Great control, high communication, dog can’t slip out, low profile.

Limitations: Not safe for tying up, must be fitted properly, recommended training for use.

  2. Standard Clip Leash - A favourite among clients at Canine & Co, and most commonly used.

Usually 4–6 feet long, they’re durable and offer a nice balance of control and freedom. Choose one suited to your dog’s strength and that feels comfortable in your hand. Always make sure your dog’s collar is fitted well to avoid escapes. Pros: Works with most gear, easy to use, variety of options.

Limitations: Depends on a well-fitted collar for security.

  3. Retractable Leash - These can suit for a smaller dog as a long line; however, they can come with some issues. They usually extend up to 30 feet, giving more freedom. Great for open spaces and recall practice, but they can encourage pulling - so if that’s an issue, it may not be the best choice. Look for a strong lock for quick control, and be aware that they can snap if tugged too hard, so ensure your dog’s weight does not exceed the weight rating. Pros: Adjustable length, good for recall training.

Limitations: Less control, needs proper weight rating, can be bulky.

  4. Head Collar - A great training tool for strong pullers.

Works by gently redirecting your dog’s head, making walks more manageable for larger-breed pullers. Watch out for potential neck strain and irritation on sensitive skin. Pros: Controls head to control dog, reduces pulling.

Limitations: Needs exact fit, can cause neck irritation, may slip off.

  5. Harness - Useful in many situations, including travel on our new bus for The Social Club.

With the right fit, they spread pressure across the chest and shoulders, reducing choking risk. (Be careful to get the correct shape, as some can cause shoulder damage or pinching.)

A front-clip design can help with pulling, but some dogs may pull more in a harness, and certain styles can be slipped, so keep your dog’s training in mind.

  6. Pros: Safe weight distribution, some types aid in lifting and pulling control.

Limitations: Limited communication, must fit well to avoid rubbing or pinching, some designs may cause discomfort.

Other considerations for your lead choice

  • Dog Size & Strength – Match leash strength to your dog’s build.

  • Walking Environment – Shorter leads suit busy streets; longer or retractable leads work for open trails.

  • Training Needs – Slip leads or head collars can aid leash manners.

  • Comfort – Padded handles make longer walks easier on your hands.

  • Length – Short leads give control; longer ones allow exploration.

Please ensure your dogs collar is fitted properly!

Even with the perfect lead, a well-fitted collar is essential for safety. Use the Two-Finger Trick:

Slide two fingers between the collar and your dog’s neck.

If it feels snug, the fit is perfect.

If you have to force your fingers in, it’s too tight.

Also check if the collar can slip over your dog’s head. Breeds with narrow or triangular heads, like Greyhounds, can easily back out of a loose collar. If you can slide it past your dog’s ears, tighten it until it’s secure but still comfortable. With the right lead and a properly fitted collar, every walk can be safer, more enjoyable, and a great bonding time for you and your dog. At Canine & Co, we’re here to offer friendly advice and guidance to help you find the best gear for your lifestyle and your furry friend’s needs, so every walk is filled with confidence, control, and happy wagging tails.
