When the temperature drops, many dog owners assume grooming can take a backseat- but winter is just as important as summer when it comes to coat care. In fact, matting, skin issues, and a buildup of dirt and moisture are even more common in the cooler months.
Here’s why grooming matters year-round, and how to keep your pup feeling, looking, and smelling their best this winter.

Why Grooming in Winter Is So Important
Wet weather, mud, and increased indoor time can all lead to:
Knots and matting, especially in double-coated or curly breeds
Dry, itchy skin from artificial heating and cold air
Dirty, damp coats that trap odours and bacteria
Excess shedding, even in winter
Regular brushing, bathing, and coat care helps keep your dog comfortable, reduces skin irritation, and prevents painful tangles.
Our Top Winter Grooming Tips
1. Brush often (and properly!)
We recommend brushing your dog at least twice a week- daily for long-haired or curly-coated breeds. A slicker brush is a great tool for removing knots, dead hair, and dirt without irritating the skin. Follow up with a wide-tooth comb to check for hidden mats around the armpits, ears, and tail.
2. Don't skip the bath
Washing your dog regularly (every 4–6 weeks for most) removes dirt and helps manage shedding. Always dry your dog thoroughly after a bath to avoid them getting cold or developing skin issues. A professional blow-dry makes a big difference!
3. Keep up with trims
Even if you're growing your dog’s coat out for warmth, trims are still essential. Regular grooming helps keep their coat even, healthy, and free from problem areas. Paws and sanitary areas especially need tidying to avoid discomfort and mess.
4. Watch those paws
In winter, paws can become cracked, sore, or collect debris. Trim the fur between their pads and rinse feet after muddy walks. You can even apply paw balm if your dog tolerates it.
5. Dry thoroughly after wet walks
If your pup gets caught in the rain or enjoys a muddy run at Social Club, dry them off well and give their coat a quick brush once dry to prevent tangles from setting in.
