Kennel Cough - Winter Reminder

As with any winter virus, we’re keeping a close eye on kennel cough this season, as a new strain is going around.

If your dog is coughing, clearing their throat, or seeming off, please keep them home. They can’t attend Social Club or stay in our boarding kennels. Dogs need to stay home for a minimum of 14 days, and at least 7 days since their coughing has stopped.

Vaccinations

Please check your dog’s vaccination is up to date. Vaccinated dogs can still catch kennel cough, but their symptoms are usually much milder. Dogs can also catch it again if a new strain is circulating, just like a human cold or flu.

Recovery at home

Keep your dog at home, warm, and resting, with plenty of water. We like to add colloidal silver to water and apple cider vinegar to food to help with recovery.

Please don’t take your dog to the vet clinic for a check while they’re coughing. Ring your vet and ask for a phone consult instead.

If your dog becomes unwell, isn’t eating or drinking, or is vomiting, always contact your vet immediately and follow their advice.

Everyone’s responsibility

As a dog owner, you’re responsible for your dog’s wellbeing and for helping stop the spread. Our team maintains strict cleaning procedures, and any dog showing symptoms is removed immediately, with the owner or emergency contact called straight away.

Canine & Co is one of the largest boarding and daycare facilities in the Bay of Plenty, so there will always be some risk of kennel cough. It’s highly contagious, and dogs can carry it for 3-5 days before showing any symptoms at all.

Please help us slow the spread this winter. We never charge to keep your dog at home with kennel cough, so please be proactive and keep them with you if they’re unwell.

Thank you for helping us keep all of our Canine & Co dogs safe, healthy, and happy this winter. We truly appreciate your support and understanding as we work together to minimise the spread of kennel cough.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to get in touch with our team.

Thank you,The Canine & Co Team 🐾
