Socialisation isn’t just about your dog making new friends. It plays a critical role in shaping their behaviour, confidence and ability to cope with the world around them. At Canine & Co, we see the difference daily in dogs who are regularly socialised in a supportive, structured environment.

What is dog socialisation?

Socialisation is the process of exposing your dog to a range of experiences, people, animals and environments in a positive and controlled way. Ideally, this begins during puppyhood, but it remains important at every stage of life. According to the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviour, the critical socialisation window is between 3 and 14 weeks of age, though ongoing social interaction continues to shape behaviour well into adulthood.

What the science says

There is strong research behind the importance of early and ongoing socialisation. Studies have found:

  • Dogs socialised before 12 weeks are significantly less likely to develop fear or aggression later in life (Frontiers in Veterinary Science, 2020).

  • Under-socialised dogs are more likely to experience anxiety and display unwanted behaviours such as excessive barking, hiding or chewing (University of Pennsylvania).

  • Dogs with positive social experiences show improved emotional regulation and higher serotonin levels (University of Lincoln, UK).

The long-term benefits

Well-socialised dogs tend to:

  • Cope better with change and unfamiliar environments

  • Interact more appropriately with other dogs and people

  • Develop fewer behaviour issues

  • Have better relationships with their humans

The mental and emotional wellbeing of a socialised dog often leads to fewer stress-related health issues too.

What if your dog missed early socialisation?

It’s never too late to start. While early experiences are important, older dogs can still benefit greatly from well-managed, positive social interaction. The key is doing so in a calm, structured way, with guidance and support when needed.

At Canine & Co, our Social Club offers exactly that. Each dog is assessed before joining and carefully placed into a well-matched pack to ensure everyone feels safe and confident. Our staff are trained to supervise and support the group, so your dog builds positive associations and learns social skills at their own pace.

How to help your dog

  • Expose them gradually to new people, dogs and places

  • Use treats, play and praise to build positive associations

  • Avoid overwhelming situations and always supervise first meetings

  • Book a Social Club trial to give your dog the chance to build confidence in a safe environment

Final thoughts

Dog socialisation is about setting your pet up for a more relaxed, resilient and happy life. Whether your dog is young or older, social interaction done right can have lasting benefits. If you're not sure where to start, we're happy to help.
